Hummingbird House marked a special milestone on 7 October, celebrating 10 years since opening its doors to children and families across Queensland.

The celebration brought together guests, staff and supporters to reflect on a decade of providing compassionate care, creating meaningful memories and supporting children with life-limiting conditions and their families.

Among the special guests was Her Excellency the Honourable Dr Jeannette Young AC PSM, Governor of Queensland and Patron of Hummingbird House, who joined the event to recognise this significant milestone.

Dr Young's connection with Hummingbird House dates back to its early years, when she first visited in her role as Queensland's Chief Health Officer and has since followed Hummingbird House’s growth with great admiration.

"Hummingbird House is a shining example of compassion and best-practice, and it has been my privilege to see it evolve over the past decade — to watch it expand, to stretch its wings beyond the four walls here; to provide, right across Queensland, assistance and expert guidance to families facing the most difficult time of their lives,” Dr Young shared at the event.

The occasion was an opportunity to celebrate the people who have helped shape Hummingbird House over the past decade, while acknowledging the families at the heart of everything the service does.

Adding a creative and meaningful touch to the celebrations, Our Space Brisbane kindly shared their time, expertise and some ceramic flowers for a special collaborative art activity.

Guests and staff were invited to paint the ceramic flowers in soft, neutral tones. The flowers were then taken to be fired before they will be displayed throughout Hummingbird House, creating a lasting reminder of the milestone and the community connections that make the House so special.

The celebrations also featured a beautifully made (and delicious) cake, generously created by 2 Chefs and a Cupcake, bringing everyone together to mark the occasion.

For 10 years, Hummingbird House has been a place of comfort, connection and support, where children and families can spend precious time together and create lasting memories.

As Hummingbird House looks towards the future, this milestone is a reminder of the difference that compassionate care, generosity and community can make.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of the Hummingbird House journey over the past decade, including our dedicated staff, volunteers, supporters and the families who continue to inspire us every day.
